First timer Worner tries for Ward 1
by Blake Wolfe/The Scugog Standard
Scugog’s Ward 1 seat now has another contender. Local contractor and first-time municipal candidate Dan Worner announced his nomination this week, officially kicking off an election race in the constituency with fellow candidate Cindy Schut.
Current Ward 1 Councillor Cecil Lamrock announced earlier this month that he would not be seeking re-election on Oct. 25.
Mr. Worner, a resident of Scugog for the last 13 years and owner of Tridan Haulage and Excavation, said that he considered a run for office after Councillor Lamrock announced that he would not run again.
“I’ve been involved in a lot of the development and seen the township’s growth and I think I have good ideas that would be an asset to Scugog,” said Mr. Worner, who has been involved with work on projects such as Canadian Tire Port Perry’s Simcoe St. location and the Canterbury Common subdivision.
Although he declined to discuss specifics of those good ideas, Mr. Worner offered that in his opinion, the township’s biggest issue over the next council term will be the potential for growth and the expansion of municipal sewer and water service to allow for it.
“We need to address our sewage capacity,” said Mr. Worner. “We need a way to bring in more money to the township without affecting the taxpayer. But we also need to preserve the downtown with moderate growth to maintain the basis of what Port Perry is - a great tourist town.”
